Image Twenty Three Photography Field Manual

Overcast Light

  • Treat the sky as a giant softbox.
  • Face the subject toward the brightest part of the sky.
  • Use the gold reflector gently for warmth and catchlights.
  • Avoid placing the subject under dense overhead foliage without fill.

Gold Reflector

  • Place 3–5 feet from the subject.
  • Use a 45-degree angle from the side.
  • Keep it slightly above waist level.
  • Feather the light to avoid yellow skin.

Fill Flash

  • Use E-TTL only when eye sockets are too dark.
  • Start flash exposure compensation at -1⅓ EV.
  • Leave regular exposure compensation at 0.
  • The flash should be invisible in the final image.
